Septic pumping in Putnam County

Pumping is the one piece of septic maintenance every household needs and most postpone. In Putnam County it also comes with a paperwork step that protects you later — if your hauler actually files it.

If your system is backing up right now: stop running water — no laundry, no dishwasher, no long showers. Every gallon you send down makes the backup worse. Then call a permitted hauler. Sewage surfacing in the yard or backing into the house is a health hazard, not just an inconvenience: keep children and pets away from any standing effluent, and don't attempt to open the tank yourself. Septic tank gases are lethal in minutes and the lids are heavy enough to be dangerous alone.

1. Who is allowed to pump a septic tank in Putnam County

Pumping and hauling septage is a permitted activity. Putnam County Department of Health issues permits to septic haulers, and the county publishes the list — though confusingly it sits under the recycling and solid waste program rather than environmental health, which is why most people never find it.

This matters practically. A permitted hauler has somewhere legal to take what comes out of your tank, and is set up to file the county paperwork described in section 3. An unpermitted one may be cheaper and may leave you with neither.

Contractors offering septic pumping in Putnam County

Five hold both a Putnam County installer licence and a Putnam County hauler permit, which means one company can pump the tank and, if the tank turns out to be the problem, repair or replace it. Two more are Putnam-permitted haulers whose business is pumping rather than installation. The remaining two appear on the county's hauler dashboard but hold Westchester County licences, and their Putnam coverage is not yet confirmed with them — their listings say so.

Compiled from the Putnam County Department of Health licensed installer register (7/1/26–6/30/27), the county's Licensed Waste Haulers dashboard, published under its recycling and solid waste program, and Westchester County's Licensed Septic Contractors and Collectors registers (county edition dated February 2025). The Putnam hauler dashboard is maintained live by the county and carries no publication date; hauler status here reflects it as read on 20 August 2026, and the county notes that inclusion is not an endorsement. Licence numbers are recorded against each listing. Always confirm current registration and insurance directly with any contractor you hire.

2. How often to pump

The county's guidance is every three to five years for a typical household, and several Putnam towns have gone further and written periodic pumping into their own codes — meaning it may not be optional where you live.

Three to five years is a range, not a rule, and where you fall in it depends on things you can count:

Waiting until something goes wrong is the expensive approach. Solids that overflow the tank travel into the leach field, and a clogged field is a five-figure repair where a pump-out is a few hundred dollars. That is the whole economic argument for maintenance, and it is why "I've never had it pumped" and "we need a new system" so often turn up in the same conversation.

3. The form your hauler must file — and why you should care

Under town codes adopted from the state's MS4 stormwater rules, whoever pumps your tank must file a Putnam County Septic System Data and Inspection Form with the health department within 30 days.

Most homeowners have never heard of it, and it is genuinely useful to them:

Ask before you book: "Do you file the county Septic System Data and Inspection Form?" A permitted hauler will say yes without hesitating. The answer tells you a good deal about who you're dealing with.

4. What it costs

Pumping is the cheapest thing you will ever do to a septic system, and prices vary with tank size, how accessible the lid is, and how long it has been. We keep current Hudson Valley figures on our septic pumping cost page.

One cost note specific to grants: routine maintenance, including tank pump-outs, is not reimbursable under the state septic replacement fund. That programme pays for replacement and upgrades, not upkeep. Homeowners over 60 may have another route — the Putnam County Housing Corporation (845-225-8493) runs an income-restricted programme that can cover routine septic maintenance including inspection and pumping.

5. When pumping is not the answer

A pump-out empties the tank. It does not repair anything. If the system backs up again within weeks or months of being pumped, the tank was not the problem — the leach field is likely failing, and pumping repeatedly is money spent on postponing a diagnosis.

Signs that point past the tank:

Our guide to signs of septic failure covers what each of these usually means. If the system does turn out to be failing and your property is near one of the county's eligible waterbodies, read the grants guide before hiring anyone — grants are not awarded retroactively for work already under way.

Getting quotes

For a routine pump-out, price and availability are most of the decision, and any permitted hauler above will do the job. For anything that might be a failure rather than a full tank, it is worth calling one of the companies that holds both permits, so the same firm can diagnose and repair without a second call-out.
