Kent packs dense lake communities — Lake Carmel above all — into the hills around the reservoirs that start New York City's Delaware and Croton water on its way south. Small lots plus sensitive water equals septic scrutiny.
Lake Carmel is one of the county's biggest converted-cottage communities: thousands of small lots platted for summer use in the 1920s–30s, now year-round homes, most on individual septic systems that predate modern standards. Replacements here routinely require engineered designs because of lot size and setbacks — the same story as Mahopac's lake hamlets, and the same reason to price out a compact enhanced system alongside a conventional one.
Kent also contains the Boyd Corners and West Branch reservoirs — both named priority basins in the NYC DEP East of Hudson septic reimbursement program. If your failing system is in one of those basins, city-funded reimbursement may be available even though these aren't state-fund lakes. White Pond and the smaller Kent lakes are worth a county call to check current program status.
